Outside of creating a solid workforce of school teachers, there is also a need for great leaders in schools, said Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister and founder of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation.
"There are no good schools with bad leaders. However, sometimes, bad schools have good leaders and that turns the school's fate around," he said.
Speaking at a closing panel discussion - 'How to take greater collective responsibility for public education' - at the fourth Global Education and Skills Summit (GESF) in Dubai, Blair also addressed the issue of education of refugee children. "Educating young people on citizenship values is fundamental to building a future of tolerance and global peace," said Blair.
Steering away from the dialogue from a political commentary on the US elections and the rising culture of populism in politics, Blair stated that education is more important than the fate of individual leaders. "There is real anxiety among people on how the world is changing; their incomes are stagnating and they are not getting anywhere in life. It then becomes easy to gravitate to populism. To push back the wave of populism, the answer is to focus on education," he said.
