The younger years are an essential time for tiny tots, as their body undergoes immense physical and mental development. This is a crucial time to introduce them to healthy meals and ensure they maintain a balanced diet.
Easier said than done, right? We all know a fussy eater (or two!) in the family, who would rather reach out for sweet treats all day than attempt a bite of their veggies. But there's no need to panic!
Dr. Nafeesa Ahmed, Director - Nutrition and Lifestyle Management, Zulekha Hospital, shares tips to improve kids' attitudes towards healthy meals:
. Children need time to interact with their food, which means they would want to touch and taste before actually eating it. Be patient with them and always be present when they eat.
. Mealtime should be a calm and happy gathering. Set up a pleasant environment and encourage all members of the family to dine together.
. It may be difficult to offer a variety of meal options at once, so try to add one new food item at a time, with a meal he/she likes.
. When introducing a new item, offer a small amount to try. There's a chance your child may not like it, but don't give up! Try again at another time, perhaps with a different presentation.
. Prepare regular, balanced meals and snacks with a variety of nutrient-rich foods, but let your child choose how much to eat. That bit of freedom does make a difference.
. Try serving dishes from different cultures and cuisines.
. Talk to them about healthy food and how you enjoy preparing them. This will help you bond.
. Encourage them to make good food choices when away from home (for example, at school canteens).
