'Giving to the global community', 'giving to your parents', and 'giving to the UAE' - these are just some of the ideas that were generated by 85 of Dubai's private school teachers during a workshop hosted by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).
More than 1,000 ideas to celebrate the Year of Giving were generated by the schools to welcome the new academic year. During the event, the principals worked in groups to talk about what giving means to them, and how it would be expressed at their schools. Others themes included 'Giving to Teachers', 'Giving to Students', and 'Giving to the Environment'.
Noting that the Year of Giving isn't about what we would like to do, but more about who we would like to be, Dr Abdulla Al Karam, chairman of the board of directors and director-general of the KHDA, said schools in Dubai are already part of a community that has giving and happiness at its heart.
"This coming academic year, we'll continue working with principals, teachers, parents and students on initiatives that bring us closer together and ensure that the spirit of the Year of Giving endures long after the year has ended."
Naveed Iqbal, Principal of International School of Creative Science, Nad Al Sheba said the latest giving initiative is an "important reminder to give back our skills, time and ideas to students". "It allows us to take a break from our routine and step back to reflect and be purposeful."
Sasha Crabb, principal of Victory Heights Primary School, said Dubai schools can share many ideas together to promote the whole ethos behind the Year of Giving. "There are so many great ideas which all schools in Dubai can share and get involved. It's about giving opportunities to students where they can share their time and find a purpose."
