More than 160 students, both expats and Emiratis, received diplomas in aviation security management and baggage handling on Thursday from the Centre of Aviation and Security Studies in Dubai, the academic branch of Emirates Group Security.
The diplomas were presented by Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, CEO and Chairman of the Emirates Group; and Hendy Cowan, the Chancellor of Edith Cowan University - which is a partner in the programme - and Australian Ambassador Pablo Kang.
Of the record-number of 168 graduates - that included four Emirati nationals - 155 graduated with degrees in aviation security, and another 55 with degrees in baggage handling.
A large percentage of the graduates this year are Emirates cabin crew members, among them Serbian national Marija Ristic told Khaleej Times: "My interest in security started as a child because my father was a solider. I've also always been interested in aviation...I realised I could increase my knowledge and passion about both topics by studying this programme. It's been a great experience."
Ristic added that the 18-month course included a wide variety of practical skills that can be applied in the aviation industry.
"These classes included topics such as safeguarding the aviation industry and aviation security operations," she noted. "The course load is rigorous and requires lots of hard work, but is worth it."
"This programme is a great opportunity to learn about aviation security from real experts. As a result, I've managed to build a proper and strong base for my future growth and development in this field," she added.
To pass, students had to sit for written exams at the end of every module. Once completed, diplomas are issued by Edith Cowan University of Australia, and are officially recognised by the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority.
Dr Abdulla Al Hashimi, divisional senior vice-president of Emirates Group security and CEO of Transguard Group, said: "The students graduating today from the Centre for Aviation and Security Studies come from 54 countries, representing the diversity of the aviation industry and its future," he said. "The knowledge these students gained during the course of their education will benefit not only Emirates, but aviation-related organisations around the globe."
