The three weeks winter break for 369,000 school children across Abu Dhabi got over on Sunday morning.
According to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), the second school term is bringing back to classrooms 130,428 students across 255 public schools in Abu Dhabi, 238,632 students in 186 private school and 5,663 students across adult education centers. In addition, 4,833 home schooling students resumed their studies on Sunday.
The Back to School effect could be seen on the jam-packed roads of the Capital on January 10 with 10 to 15 minutes added to the travelling time for most Abu Dhabi residents.
"The traffic was very heavy on Sunday morning. I left early, so I got to work on time, but it was noticeably much more congested than it used to be previously," said Lee Khalfan Al Romaithi, a UAE national, who takes around 40 minutes to reach his office daily.
"It was not just parents taking children to work between 7am and 8 am, that increased the traffic, but also people returning from the winter holidays, just before the start of schools," he added.
While traffic jams got worse in most areas around schools on the main Abu Dhabi island, traffic around schools on the outskirts of the city was more manageable.
Abu Dhabi Police urged parents to abide by traffic rules and keep children on the back seats with seatbelts on, for their own safety.
