The Ras Al Khaimah Education Zone has instructed all school canteens in the emirate to cut the prices of foodstuff being sold to students here by 35 to 50 per cent.

The decision followed an urgent meeting held between the zone and the food suppliers in view of parents’ complaints about an unreasonable hike and difference in food prices in canteens.

Sumaia Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director of the RAK Education Zone, said not only have the prices of foodstuff in school canteens across the northern emirate been unified, but they have also been decreased.

“All sandwiches are now available at Dh2 instead of Dh3, and a small bottle of milk costs Dh1 instead of Dh2.”

The RAK Education Zone listens to complaints from parents and students and instantly takes action, she added.

“This is our policy; our doors are always open for all to instantly respond to any problem and find an effective way out.”

Al Suwaidi said they had a meeting with parents in all schools of the northern region of the emirate, discussed the problems, and listened to the comments of the agents of the suppliers.

“We then took action and instructed the suppliers to cut the prices of all types of sandwiches and milk by Dh1.”

Amena Rashid Al Sakb, Head of Environment and School Activities, said the parents were quite confused about the prices of some types of milk, mainly the ones with chocolate or fruit.”

“They were presented with a list of all food items and their prices, and they requested a Dh1 cut in sandwich price. “The suppliers positively responded to parents’ complaints and pledged never to offer any sandwiches against Dh3 at all schools of the emirate.”

The suppliers also affirmed that all milk and juices at the school canteens will not be sold for more than Dh2, she noted.

Hailing the move, the parents thanked the RAK Education Zone, and the suppliers for their prompt response.

“We only wanted the prices to be the same at all canteens of the emirate,” they said.

“A bottle of water was sold against Dh1 at a canteen while the same was available at Dh5 at another canteen. The same applies to sandwiches, milk, and juices,” they added.

Al Sakb said the Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Foundation for Charity and Humanitarian Works supplies food to canteens of 46 schools while the B.H. Trading Company supplied to 28 others.

“Both entities are supplying high-quality products.”
