Dubai — “The role of schools is not confined to education alone, but they have to focus on upbringing and instruction also. And school managements should shoulder the responsibility of addressing difficulties and problems students face in the right way so that a sense of positive behaviour is inculcated among students,” said Ali Mehad Al Suwaidi, assistant undersecretary, Ministry of Education for private sector.
Al Suwaidi made the remarks during a phone-in with the Sharjah Radio and TV’s live programme. He was replying to a parent who had complained of the punishment method pursued by a private school in Dubai. The school had detained the student on campus for over an hour as punishment for misbehaving.
“The process of correcting the conduct of the student is very important, and the accepted measures are specified in the rules and regulations issued by the Ministry of Education,” he said. “They are laid down by experts in instructional reform,” he added.
He said the way the school pursued punishment in this instance is not progressive and that making a student stay back for an hour or more after school time is unacceptable.”
