Future leaders got their first taste of governance in a mock parliamentary session organised at Our Own English High School, Sharjah. The second edition of the mock parliament, modelled on the lines of the Indian parliamentary system, took place on February 6.
The session’s debates were contested between a ruling party and an opposition party, and participants belonged to Grades 1 to 7. About 20 young parliamentarians took part in the competition and the topic of debate was ‘Facebook and Twitter are great sources of social networking’.
The ruling party spoke for the motion and the opposition spoke against the use of social media.
School teachers said the objective of the mock parliament was to familiarise students with parliamentarian functioning and language. The ruling party, headed by Abhirami Venugopal of Grade 7, said: “It is a great learning experience. You get to know how the parliament system works and you understand the correct usage of language as well.”
Tushara Giri, also a Grade 7 student, headed the opposition party. She said: “Being a part of the mock parliament enhances your debating abilities.”
School head mistress Usha Balachandran moderated the sessions. Young leaders amazed the audience with their debating competence.
Usha appreciated all parliamentarians and an opportunity was given to the parents to express their opinions on the debate. A separate art exhibition by Grade 5 and 6 students was also simultaneously organised at the school.
