Schools cannot charge extra for parties, trips: MoE

Ministry of Education urges parents to lodge complaint against the schools that violate ministry's instructions at any education zone immediately.

Sharjah - The Ministry of Education (MoE) has warned private and public schools in all emirates against charging parents for any activities such as party, graduation ceremonies and trips.

The MoE also urged parents to immediately lodge a complaint against the schools that violate the MoE instruction at any education zone.

The warning came following a report published by Khaleej Times on May 12 about parents complaining of schools charging them between Dh100 and Dh200 per student to organise end of the year parties and other functions.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Ali Mehaid Al Suwaidi, Under Secretary of MoE and Assistant Director of private education department said that charging parents for organising parties is not allowed.

The ministry has instructed all education zones in the emirates to send circulars to schools in this regard.

New phenomenon

“This phenomenon has appeared since two years. We instructed schools to hold simple graduation ceremonies that do not cost money but some of these schools organise parties and ceremony in five star hotels and fancy halls and parents have to pay for them. This practice will not be allowed any more and tough action will be taken against those who violate the MoE instruction and regulation,” he said.

The Sharjah Education Zone, after receiving several complaints from parents issued circulars warning private and public schools of charging parents fees of end of the year party, concerts and graduation.

A senior official from the education zone told Khaleej Times they received many complaints from parents about schools charging them Dh100 to organise graduation ceremonies or school parties. He urged schools intending to organise parties or trips to submit a request for the same at least 20 days prior to the events.

“Documents from sponsors of the event must be attached along with the request. Private schools must follow the executive draft of law number 52,” he said. -afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
