Two Indian students studying in Our Own English High School, Sharjah (boys), have made their school proud by bagging a local and international award, respectively.
Senior school boys Harshith Belagur and Abhinav Singhla won laurels for the school. Belagur's active social campaigning and relentless crusade against various global issues fetched him the coveted International Diana Award 2016.
He received the award under the category 'Active Campaigner'. The International Diana Award is given by Diana Award, a charity organisation based in London, UK. It was launched by former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the memory of the Late Princess Diana of Wales. The present award patron is the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. The award is given to individuals who have shown exemplary behaviour in terms of campaigning, volunteering or fund raising.
Harshith is the founder of Together For A Better World, a social welfare group which has organised a number of events like Used-School Book Collection Drive, Relief for the Victims of the Nepal Earthquake and Chennai Floods, Milk Powder Collection Drive, Iftar distribution to about 5,000 laborers, etc.
Singhla was the proud recipient of the Energy Globe Award in 2016, under the Youth Category, for his participation in the 'Clean Up Sharjah Campaign' project. This award is presented annually to projects focusing on maximising the benefits of energy efficiency renewable resources and the conservation of resources.
This initiative is the first ever student-initiated campaign in the UAE. Founded on December 23, 2014, the campaign covered nine areas of Sharjah, with support from over 500 volunteers.
