Dubai — Shorter school hours will be implemented during holy month of Ramadan according to a circular issued by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) to private schools in Dubai.
Mohammed Darwish, Chief of Regulations and Permits Commission at KHDA has mandated schools to make necessary arrangements to facilitate shorter breaks in all grade levels for all students.
School timings will be from 8.30am to 1.30pm during Ramadan. The circular also noted the importance of supporting fasting students to continue with normal school life.
“In order to accommodate their needs, the school should ensure that they are not made to engage in demanding physical activities and not exposed to heat to reduce the risk of dehydration,” read the circular.
Out of respect for the holy month and for fasting students, staff and parents, eating and drinking should be prohibited in the public areas of the school, and should be limited to designated areas.
Schools may choose to plan informative activities for staff, parents and students to raise awareness about the practices of this holy month and how it impacts society. Teachers will keep the hours as per their contracts with the school and in line with the labour law prevalent during the Ramadan.
