dubai - Arab youth are vying for scholastic excellence and their future growth, according to the Abdullah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education (ADFE). Its Stem Scholars Program has received over 14,500 applications in just five weeks since its launch by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
In the next phase, the Foundation will review all the eligible submitted applications and conduct interviews with shortlisted candidates. The first batch of Al Ghurair Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Scholars will be announced in early August 2016.
This year, applicants applied to one of ADFE's four partner universities - the American University in Cairo (AUC), American University of Sharjah (AUS) US, American University of Beirut (AUB), and Khalifa University. "Our programmes were designed with every high-achieving underserved Arab youth in mind, and we're thrilled to have already received an astounding number of applications for our first year of scholarships offered, starting September," said Maysa Jalbout, CEO, Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation.
"The Foundation is committed to equipping Arab youth with the knowledge and skills they need to fulfill their promise as the future leaders of the region - this is the first step of their journey."
The Foundation scholarship application is among the first in the region to be put out exclusively online thorugh a student portal, for them to submit parameters such as proof of their academic performance, financial requirements, leadership skills and commitment to giving back to society.
ADFE, one of the largest privately funded philanthropic education initiatives in the world, has an investment of US1.1 bn (Dh4.2 bn), and have pledged to reach a minimum of 15,000 promising Arab youth pursuing education in STEM subjects over the next 10 years.
