Dubai — An unusual sight met the eye of visitors of the Mall of the Emirates with a number of kids — in the age group of 8 to 16 — gathered at a home furnishings store at the mall. Escorted by families, the youngsters were the winners of the Marina Star 2014 contest organised by Marina Home Interiors.

The creativity contest based on the theme “What does your home mean to you” received 600 submissions that included pieces of art, photographs and even films from youngsters across the UAE.

All participants stood the chance to win a title and also a year’s school fees. Winners bagged iPads, cameras, desktops and playstations. The grand prize winner was 11-year-old Nicole Correia, whose entry in the category Art/Sketching/Drawing started with these lines: “I envision my home with dad as the roof and mum as the walls, where my brother, sister, puppy, bunny and I feel safe…” Correia’s received a year’s school fees for her winning entry.

Runner-up Syed Tasmieh, 14, in the same category was awarded six months of school fees as his prize money. He described home as: “It’s like a crystal ball. It’s where our heart is.”

Krish Prem, 8, won an Apple desktop in the film-making category for his entry named “I love my family and I love my home”.

In the same category, Mina Milusheva, 12, won a camera for her entry that concluded with these lines: “My home is my small universe!”.

Nine-year-old Lance Leland Marrero, won a playstation for his poetic endeavours in the creative writing category.

His poem goes ‘My home is more than a place. It is my very own space. It is like my mum’s embrace…’

In the same category, Katharina Scholz won an iPad for her entry “As a gate to start off every journey”. “This initiative has stemmed from the belief that we are responsible for the way future generations view art and creativity”, said Khurshid Vakil, Co-founder of Marina Home Interiors.

“The response has been truly overwhelming and we have been impressed by the caliber of entries in all four categories. It has been heartwarming to see just how much the youth of the UAE appreciate the important things in life — family, happiness and home — and we are so happy to be celebrating this creativity today.”
