Students look for off-beat career paths

Parents of senior school students want children to pursue engineering and medicine professions, while students showed greater interest in off-beat career paths. This trend was visible at the career fair organised by Our Own English Girls High School, Sharjah for students of grades IX to XII on Thursday, December 5.

Principal of the school Asma Gilani said: “The orientation had a unique flavour since it did not have long drawn speeches by professionals. The programme was split into two interactive sessions with panel members talking about their fields and answering queries asked by parents and students. Panelists came from industries like media, medicine, engineering and aviation. The school premise also had around 30 leading universities with vital information for the visitors.”

At the panel discussion, parents focused on careers in the field of medicine and engineering. Some parents were also keen on knowing how many hours of study is required to become a doctor and the exams needed to be taken to become a doctor. However, students were curious about careers in the aviation and media industry. A cabin crewmember, Sneha Cherian was asked several questions on her life ‘on the move’. Students also raised questions to a radio jockey, Aroma, who suggested that the job is a lot of fun and the pay is good as well.
