Once completed — with all nuts and bolts fastened — the car will take to the road and compete at the 2013 global Shell Eco-marathon challenge.

The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT)’s Ruwais Colleges and Shell signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Sunday with the view that Shell will support the engineering students throughout the build of the “made in the UAE” car.

Ruwais College is set to join seven other teams at the innovation driven challenge from the UAE as well as a number of teams from the region, such as Qatar, Egypt and Lebanon, with the event taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July. The MoU was signed by HCT vice chancellor Dr Tayeb Kamali, and Shell Abu Dhabi Country Chair John Barry.

Dr Kamali talked about the impacts the challenge will have on working towards a greener UAE: “Shell’s Eco-marathon campaign is a unique opportunity which enables our students and future UAE leaders to apply their engineering and project management experience to a real time project with global implications. Developing a fuel-efficient car locally gives our students a platform through which they can impact the future of energy.”

Barry wished the students the very best ahead of the challenge and said the skills gained from the project would enable participants to become future contributors to the economy of the UAE.— news@khaleejtimes.com
