Obesity among school children is a matter of serious concern. Overeating coupled with lack of physical exercise results in obesity. They should be encouraged to eat more salads and vegetables. Schools must increase physical training activities for students during the day and also educate students about the harmful effects of junk food. A balanced diet is essential for growing up kids.

It is often said that we are what we eat. I have to admit that obesity is one of the prime health issues especially in children. We have no right to blame our genes for obesity, because it depends on the amount of food we consume and what kind of food we eat. Students get obese as they are not aware of what to consume and what to avoid.

I’m not sure how the rest of schools in UAE work but my school had swimming and physical education classes from grade 6 to 10. During those years, we learned to play volleyball, basketball etc since we had some great Romanian gym teachers. I believe that if certain classes such as swimming were graded, as is done in the West, it would help students remain physically fit.

‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. I have observed that usually all school-going children are either obese or wear spectacles. They are always stuck to their electronic devices. And the main reason behind this, I think, is that here in the UAE the weather is mostly very hot and kids cannot go out and play in the heat and there are very few indoor sports complexes. I think more of well-equipped sports complexes should be built and made available for the public at minimum charges.
