Bagging a prize of $1 million, the winning teacher will be awarded in Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The teachers' identities were revealed on Wednesday after a top 50 shortlist of names was narrowed down by a prize committee.
In 2016, Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub was crowned the winner of the Global Teacher Prize. Hanan grew up in a refugee camp in Palestine and moved into education after her children were left traumatised by a shooting incident they witnessed on their way home from school.
Now in its third year, the $1 million award is the biggest prize of its kind, and was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. It also aims to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
