Come March and one of the world's most exceptional teachers will be recognised for his or her work in the education field. The top 10 finalists for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2017 have been revealed and they will now battle it out to be crowned winner.

Bagging a prize of $1 million, the winning teacher will be awarded in Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The teachers' identities were revealed on Wednesday after a top 50 shortlist of names was narrowed down by a prize committee.

In 2016, Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub was crowned the winner of the Global Teacher Prize. Hanan grew up in a refugee camp in Palestine and moved into education after her children were left traumatised by a shooting incident they witnessed on their way home from school.
Now in its third year, the $1 million award is the biggest prize of its kind, and was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. It also aims to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
By unearthing thousands of stories of heroes that have transformed young people's lives, the prize hopes to bring to life the exceptional work of millions of teachers all over the world.
The UK's Prince Harry also paid tribute to the finalists via a video message. He was seen saying: "Very best teachers go beyond the pages of textbooks" to teach young people about determination, aspiration, resilience and compassion. We face setbacks and challenges and our teachers play a vital role in preparing us for these ups and downs."
The winner will be announced at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai on March 19.
