10 big tumours removed from woman's womb in Dubai

Dubai - Specialists at Dubai Hospital managed to remove all the tumours, which came in the form of fibroids.

A 39-year-old woman who was experiencing 'excruciating abdominal pain', on top of bleeding heavily every single month, sought help from doctors at Dubai Hospital - it turned out, she had 10 massive tumours in her womb, including one that is around the size of a mango.

Specialists at Dubai Hospital managed to remove all the tumours, which came in the form of fibroids, after a challenging laparoscopic procedure that took two and a half hours.

They opted for a minimally invasive operation, since the unmarried woman wanted to ensure her uterus would remain intact as she intended to get married and have children.

The procedure was done by the hospital's gynaecology laparoscopy team, under the leadership of Dr Maryam Alrayes.
Benign tumours
Elaborating on the case, Dr Omayma Abdulkareem, consultant and member of the team, said: "The woman was experiencing excruciating pain in her lower abdomen and had heavy bleeding during her menstruation cycle every month, resulting in chronic anaemia that required her to have blood transfusions often."

Upon investigation, they found that she had uterine fibroids, which are mainly benign tumours that originate in the uterus and often appear during childbearing years.

"However, in her case, we found 10 fibroids that were all of big sizes, with the biggest one measuring 20 by 18cm," Dr Abdulkareem said.

With this problem, the patient's life had been disrupted as she suffered heavy blood loss every month, which could further lead to other health issues.

Talking about the surgery, Dr Abdulkareem said: "Usually for these kinds of fibroids, we have to put a 10cm cut on the abdomen as the size of the fibroids was big, but our challenge was to remove 10 big fibroids - including a 20cm one - through this 1cm port (opening)."

The team managed to break down the tumours and remove them through the tiny openings.

One day after the operation, the patient was discharged and has been recuperating well.
