An Asian man, who dozed off at the wheel, had a close shave after his truck veered off the road, crashed into a pavement on the roadside and flipped over several times near Al Tawoon roundabout in Al Khan area in Sharjah on Wednesday morning.

The overturned truck came to a halt on the sandy area adjacent to the road, without hitting vehicles or causing injuries.

The police patrols and traffic experts rushed to the site where they found the driver unhurt and safe. The cops cleared the massive traffic congestion caused due to the crash.

During interrogation, the driver told the police that he had medicines which caused him "drowsiness and fatigue".

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a top official at the traffic department said drowsy driving had caused a number of accidents and claimed many lives during 2018. Such an accident usually happens when a driver has not slept enough. "It can also take place due to untreated sleep disorders, medication, drinking alcohol, or tiredness," he added. When on medication that causes drowsiness, the driver is able to pay less attention on the road, and his reaction time also slows down, he pointed out.

The motorists must be aware of the drowsiness symptoms which include yawning or blinking frequently, missing an exit or drifting from the lane.

The driver must carefully read the leaflet that comes with the medicine before taking it. It is best not to take medicine before driving the vehicle. Take medicine when at home and avoid driving while on medication, the police official said.
