Man ordered to pay ex-wife Dh688,000 for 27 years of 'service'

The economics major gave up a career to become a housewife.

A man has been ordered by the court to pay his wife approximately Dh688,000 for her 'services' as a housewife for nearly 30 years.
The Argentine man has been ordered by a judge to pay his ex-wife compensation for the years of their marriage she spent raising the children and completing household chores, the Mirror reported.
The 70-year-old woman is an economics major, but gave up her career after marriage.

Known only as ML (wife) and DB (husband) the couple were married for 27 years between 1982 and 2009 and lived in Comodoro Rivadavia and then the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo.
According to local news outlet Clarín, the pair's divorce was finalised in 2011.
At the time of her divorce, she was unfortunately considered 'too old' to find a job - hence she decided to seek financial compensation from her ex-husband.
The judge ordered the former husband to pay her eight million Argentine pesos (approximately Dh688,000).
The judge justified the ruling by stating how the woman had faced financial difficulties, while the husband had "a good time".
She added: "The economic dependence of wives on their husbands is one of the central mechanisms through which women are subordinated to society.
"In most families, women still mainly assume the burden of domestic chores and the care of children, even when they perform some external activity."
