Greek authorities have mounted a search and rescue operation in the eastern Aegean after a boat carrying migrants or refugees sank off the northern coast of the island of Kos. The body of one infant has been recovered.
The coast guard said one survivor managed to reach the shore and raise the alarm. The survivor told authorities between six and 10 people were believed to have been in the boat when it sank.
A coast guard patrol boat, a vessel from the European border control agency Frontex, a helicopter and a vessel from a Greek volunteer rescue group were searching the area for potential survivors.
Greece's eastern islands, located close to the Turkish shore, are the main gateway for refugees heading to Europe. Hundreds have died attempting the crossing.
