Goals from Argentine forward Jose Sand in the 53rd minute and substitute Bandar Mohammed in the first minute of injury time gave Al Ain a 2-0 victory.
Al Ain made a couple of forays initially but the opening minutes meandered around in midfield.
They had a chance, albeit a not so threatening one in the 17th minute but Hazza Salem headed wide after a nice cross from Argentine forward Jose Sand.
Wahda came up with one two minutes later but Hugo’s pile driver was collected by the goalkeeper Abdulla Sultan. Later, in the 31st minute, Wahda almost went ahead after a nice build up by their Brazilian forward Fernando Baiano.
Baiano found no space as he was tied down by the defence and he passed to Eisa Al Marzouqi.
Marzouqi fired in a precise cross from the right but Hugo’s header just whizzed over the cross bar.
Al Ain attacked on a counter in the 37th minute with the Wahda defence laid bare with two defenders, but Sand failed to find a way past and was cleared by the defence. Three minutes later, Wahda had a chance after Hugo fired a nice ball in from the left flank but Baiano shot hit the side netting.
Al Ain almost got the lead with three minutes to go for half-time but Sand’s screamer was pushed away by the diving goalkeeper Ali Al Hosni for a corner.
The Wahda goalkeeper Ali Al Hosni was called into action again in the final minute of the first half and he charged out to deny a Hazza Salem solo.
Al Ain went ahead after the break through their Argentine forward Jose Sand. After a nice build-up from the left flank, Hazza Salem got it through to Sand, who hoodwinked the three defenders and slotted it over the diving goalkeeper in the 53rd minute.
Al Ain added the second in the first minute of injury time through substitute Bandar Mohammed.
