Al Habtoor to establish a new football club

DUBAI — Al Habtoor Group of Companies will become the first private business to set a football team which will take part in the UAE National League, it was confirmed on Friday.

According to the Group’s chairman Khalaf Al Habtoor, the group will approach the country’s football governing authority to register the team in the First Division League effective from next week.

Speaking to newsmen at the Emirates International School in Dubai on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the group, Al Habtoor said they have decided to take a step forward and shift their role from sponsors to key players in the sports arena.

“We will establish a new football club to be represented in the football league,” he reiterated.

Al Habtoor are sponsors of Al Ain Football Club and have been supporting sports activities within the UAE including Polo and Tennis tournaments.

“The time has come to be part of the sport,” he added.

Meanwhile, the group celebrated its 40th anniversary with six-a-side tournament in which 12 teams lined up for honours.

Ahmed Sanio’s last gasp strike earned Shaheen Tyres a narrow 2-1 victory over Diamondlease in the final.

Khalaf Al Habtoor gave away the trophy and prizes to the winners. Shaheen Tyres claimed the Cup, gold medals and Dh20,000 in prize-money.

Runners up Diamondlease received the silver medals and Dh15,000 as Al Habtour Group walked away with the third place honours.

Top Security team were awarded a consolation trophy as the most ideal side.
