The 14th AFOC Open Sports Festival is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs. The Sports Festival comes to an end on Monday.
More than 3220 contestants, representing 61 nationalities from various countries of the world, participated in the annual Ramadan sports festival which kick-started on August 8.
The match finished 2-2 after regulation time and the scoreline remained the same at the end of the full 30 minutes of extra time. Al Istishariyya won the match 6-3.
Al Istishariyya will lock horns against EMCO, who whipped Al Dhafra 5-1 in another quarter-final. Saif Balhesa will take on Statistics Centre in the other semifinal. Saif Balhesa scored a solitary goal win over Economy Department, while Statistics Centre defeated Prisons 4-1. The winners will be honoured after the final match, with the champions taking home a cash prize of Dh 150,000 plus the trophy of the championship and gold medal. The first runner-up takes home a cash prize of Dh 100,000 and the silver medal, while the second runner-up will receive a cash prize of Dh 80,000 and the bronze medal. The fourth-placed team will get Dh 20,000.
Meanwhile, in the fencing championship, Alaadeen Al Sayyid of Egypt will take on compatriot Tariq Fuad in the final of the Epee event at the Al Maqta Hall. Mohammed Samandi of Tunisia finished third, while Hamad Kazim of Iraq was fourth. Twenty-eight contestants from the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia and Qatar, participated in the preliminary round of the Epee event, with Alaadeen Al Sayyid, Hamad Kazim, Tariq Fuad and Mohammed Samandi making it to the final round.
Alaadeen Al Sayyid defeated Iraq’s Hamad Kazim 15-6 to book a place in the final against Tariq Fuad, who defeated Mohammed Samandi 15-7.
UAE’s Majid Al Mansoori and Ali Al Mansoori failed to make it to the final, following their elimination at the quarterfinal stage. In the Sabre event, 17 contestants from seven countries, including the UAE, Tunisia, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Bahrain and Iraq, vied for honours. Mahmoud Samir of Egypt defeated Ehab Samandi of Tunisia 15-13, while Iraq’s Salah Hashim defeated Tunisia’s Ehab Shaban 15-14.
Ninety contestants, representing 12 nationalities from within the UAE and abroad are participating in the Foil, Epee and Sabre categories.
Three teams, including Baniyas, Emirates Heritage Club and Al Ain Centre are representing the UAE in the championship.
