Al Jazira appoint Dr Waller as medical services director

ABU DHABI — Dr Mark Waller, who has more than two decades of experience at Liverpool FC, has been appointed medical services director at the Al Jazira Club. In the role, he will lead a team of 23 staff in looking after all aspects of medical care at the club – from injury prevention, through to nutrition and the rehabilitation of injured players.

Dr Waller joins the club in the run up to the new season and is working closely with the first team coaches to bring added benefits to the squad.

In the coming weeks and months his brief will expand to include the youth academy and those involved in all sports and in all age groups at the club.

He was recruited by the board of directors at Al Jazira Club after they decided the prevention and treatment of injuries needed to be a priority.

“I spent 21 years at Liverpool Football Club and gained a lot of experience in that time,” said Dr Waller.

“The medical facilities here are the equivalent of an English premier league club and it is my job to make sure we get the most out of them.

“It is fantastic to see we have so many physiotherapists and other medical staff working here. With a big team effort we can raise the standard of medical care and I am looking forward to getting on with the job at hand.”

The CEO of Al Jazira Club, Phil Anderton, said candidates from around the world were looked at before Dr Waller, who has also worked with the England U-21 squad, was offered the job.

“One of the ways we are moving forward and progressing is by improving the medical care throughout the club,” he said. “Dr Waller has a huge amount of experience at the very top level and expertise in all the right areas. We feel he is ideal for this position and brought him to the club after an intensive recruitment search that took us to many parts of the world.”
