Al Wahda take five-point lead

ABU DHABI — Al Wahda’s quest for a fourth crown stayed on track as they defeated Emirates at the Al Nahyan Stadium on Saturday night as the Etisalat UAE Pro-League entered the home stretch.

The 3-1 win over the newly-crowned President’s Cup winners Emirates kept Al Wahda five points clear of their closest rivals Al Jazira, who stayed in touch with a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Al Nasr at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on Friday night.

Al Wahda have won 16, drawn one and lost two and are on 49 points, while Al Jazira have won 13, drawn five and lost one and are on 44 points, with three games left in the League.

Emirates are second from bottom with 14 points with four wins, two draws and 13 losses.

Al Nasr are placed ninth with 19 points. They have won six, drawn one and lost 12 games.

Wahda saw the return of captain Haider Alo Ali, who missed their last league game against Al Ain. Brazilians Andre Luciano Pinga and Magrao, Mahmoud Khamis, Talal Abdulla, Ismail Matar, Basheer Saeed too made a comeback to the squad after being rested for the game against Iran’s Zobahan in the AFC Champions League.

Saeed Salem Al Kathairi put Al Wahda ahead on the half hour mark and Andre Luciano Pinga doubled the lead with five minutes left for half-time, off a penalty.

Emirates pulled one back after the break through Javad Kazemian but Wahda’s Ismail Matar inched them further ahead with 10 minutes left on the clock, with a scorching pile driver, which was clocked at 100kmph.

Earlier, on Friday night, Jazira stayed within striking distance if Wahda were to slip up, with a 2-0 victory.

Jazira piled on the pressure right from the start and had an opportunity to go ahead in the very third minute but Subait Khater’s dangerous freekick was cleared by a diving Al Nasr goalkeeper. Al Nasr had a chance in the 20th minute but C Tenorio try from close range was punched away by goalkeeper Ali Khaseif.

Subait Khater had another opportunity with three minutes left for half-time but his shot went over the cross bar. Sultan Al Minhali tried to get past the defence but could find a way through.

His feeble attempt rebound off a defender and fell in Khater’s path. But Khater fired it over.

Jazira went ahead in the 65th minute through Tony, off a penalty and Ali Mabkhout sealed the win with three minutes left on the clock.
