But Brazil’s delight was curtailed when midfielder Kaka was controversially sent off for a second yellow card two minutes from time. Luis Fabiano, out of form lately, smashed the ball into the roof of the net from an acute angle after pouncing on a delicate pass from Kaka in the 25th minute. He made it 2-0 in the 50th though replays suggested he handled the ball before scoring.

Kaka set up Elano for the third in the 62nd minute before Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba pulled one back with a header in the 79th.

Brazil lead Group G with six points from Portugal and Ivory Coast on one and North Korea with no points. Portugal and North Korea meet in Cape Town on Monday.
