Controversial goal puts Independiente back on top

BUENOS AIRES - Central defender Eduardo Tuzzio headed a fifth minute goal to give Independiente a 1-0 win away to Chacarita Juniors on Saturday and take them back to the top of the Argentine Clausura championship.

The goal came from a controversial corner awarded after a clearance by a defender, which was heading for the sideline, hit the linesman on the knee and went over the goalline.

Independiente lead the standings with 20 points from nine matches, two ahead of Godoy Cruz with Velez Sarsfield third on 15.

Boca Juniors and River Plate were looking to get much-needed wins on Sunday, a week ahead of their “Superclasico” derby at Boca’s Bombonera ground next weekend. Boca visit Tigre and River are at home to Huracan.

Argentina’s “Big Two” are struggling in the lower reaches of the Clausura table.
