Rangers boss Walter Smith and chief executive Martin Bain held talks with Eagles while showing the former Manchester United player around the Glasgow club’s Ibrox stadium and Murray Park training facilities on Wednesday.

Eagles returned home to consider the Rangers offer and was due to meet Burnley manager Brian Laws on Thursday before making his final decision.

The 24-year-old has just one year left on his contract and that deal calls for his wages to be reduced following Burnley’s relegation from the English Premier League last season.

Laws still hopes to persuade Eagles to stay but he knows it will be a tough task, given the lure of playing Champions League football with Rangers.

‘Clearly he is a talented player and one I do not want to sell,’ Laws told Burnley’s website. ‘But we have a serious financial offer and, with only 12 months left on his deal, we have to be aware that he could walk away next summer for nothing.

‘He will make the best decision for him and his family, because ultimately it will be the player’s decision whether he stays with us or not.

‘But he is a crowd favourite here and I hope that plays a part in his decision.’

Eagles has made 95 appearances for Burnley and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2009.

If he joins Rangers it will be the first time the club has paid a transfer fee in nearly two years due to financial difficulties.
