UAE Lose but Win Hearts

The UAE Legends may have lost the final, but they certainly won the hearts of their fans with a brilliant display in the Emirates Dubai Football Sevens.

The UAE finished runner-up in the Legends Trophy as they lost a thriller to Arsenal 3-2 at the Sevens Ground on Saturday.

Martin Hayes put the Gunners ahead, but UAE soon hit back as Ibrahim Saad made it 1-1 with a brilliant finish.

Arsenal, however, took the lead again through Anders Limpar and Danny O’Shea soon made it 3-1, but Bakit Saad kept the hopes alive with a fine goal.

Saad’s goal did give them hope, but they couldn’t get the much needed equalizer and thus Arsenal won the title.

In the semifinals, the UAE 1990 were at their mesmerizing best as they thrashed English giants Chelsea 5-1.

It was a simply brilliant performance from the legendary UAE players who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Celtic in the quarters in the morning.

The losing quarter-finalists competed for the Legends Trophy while the winners played for the Legends Cup.

In the match against Chelsea, UAE played brilliant attacking football and the ‘Blues’ simply had no answers. Abdul Sultan scored a brace while Fahad Khamis, Adnan Al Thalyani Khamis and Hassan Mohammed scored one each. Clive Walker scored the only goal for Chelsea.

In the other Legends Trophy semifinal, Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-0.

In the Legends Cup, AC Milan played some fabulous football as they hammered Rangers 4-1 in the semis. Their temperamental superstar Paolo Di Canio tormented the hapless Rangers defenders with his trickery. The former West Ham United star scored the team’s third goal, while the other goals were scored by Stefan Eranio, Mario Bortolazzi and Angelo Carbone. For Rangers, Gordon Dune scored the only goal.

Earlier in the quarters, Milan demolished Arsenal 4-0 as the legendary striker Christian Vieri scored a memorable hat-trick. Rangers had defeated Manchester United 5-2 in the quarters.

In the other Legends Cup semifinal, Celtic overcame Liverpool 1-0.

Blackburn, meanwhile, won the Professional Trophy with a superb 5-0 win over Feyenoord in the final.

The losing quarterfinalists of the professional event played for the Professional Trophy. In the semifinals, Feyenoord got the better of Celtic 1-0, while Brondby lost to Blackburn 0-2.

The winners of the professional event quarter-finals played for the Professional Cup. There in the semis, Olympiacos stunned favourites AC Milan 2-1, while in the other semi, Arsenal lost to Leeds United 0-1.

Earlier in the quarters, Olympiacos beat Celtic 1-0, Arsenal defeated Brondby 2-0, Feyenoord lost to AC Milan 0-1 and Leeds United beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0.
