The Hanseatic City side finished seventh in the league last season and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League where they lost to Fulham, but they still sacked coach Bruno Labbadia after a run of poor results.

Veh has already promised Hamburg fans plenty of attacking football for next season with a side boasting strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mladen Petric.

‘Hamburg have tremendous attacking potential, which must be used,’ said Veh at a press conference in Hamburg.

The 49-year-old Veh has signed a contract keeping him in Hamburg until June 30, 2012, as he replaces Labbadia, who was sacked in the wake of his side’s 5-1 defeat by Hoffenheim at the end of April.

Veh won the Bundesliga title with Stuttgart in 2007 before leaving in November, 2008 to take over at Wolfsburg, but was fired after his side failed to make an impact on either the Bundesliga or Champions League last season.
