Herbert told a news conference on Tuesday he had extended his contract with the Phoenix, due to expire next year, for three years.

The former New Zealand defender, who guided the All Whites to being the only unbeaten team in South Africa, was expected to remain as national coach but said negotiations with Football New Zealand were continuing.

Herbert said he had received “a few offers” from top-line clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa but had been eager to stay in New Zealand. His extended contract with Wellington — New Zealand’s only full-time professional football club — involved an increase in salary but Herbert said he was still probably one of the lowest-paid national coaches in the world.

Herbert’s annual contract as New Zealand coach, which expired after the World Cup, was worth about 50,000 New Zealand dollars ($35,000).

Herbert has been credited with sparking a boom in the popularity of football in rugby-mad New Zealand by guiding the Phoenix to last season’s A-League playoffs and New Zealand to the World Cup.

Herbert said he was concentrating immediately on Wellington’s next A-League campaign which begins on Aug. 13.

“I’d love to go better. Why can’t this club go to a grand final?” Herbert said.
