You will soon be able to use your UAE-issued driving licence when in China. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Lt.-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; and Meng Hongwei, Chinese Deputy Minister of Public Security, will introduce mutual recognition of driving licences by the UAE and China, particularly for light private vehicles.
This was one of the many agreements and MoUs signed by the two countries on Monday during the official visit of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Li Yuanchao, Vice-President of China, were present when the agreements were signed.
Education
Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Du Yubo, Vice-Minister of Education in China, signed an MoU for cooperation in the field of higher education. The MoU will encourage cooperation in science and ensure the quality of education in centres of scientific research in both countries.
The agreement also stipulates that the two parties will exchange university scholarships annually, and share experiences, publications and periodicals on higher education.
An agreement was also signed for the exchange of faculty members and students, and strengthening the academic and research cooperation between the Masdar Institute for Scientific Research and Tsinghua University. The agreement was signed by Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, and Chen Xu, chairperson of the Tsinghua University Council.
Space
Dr Khalifa Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the UAE Space Agency, and the administrator of China National Space Administration, signed an MoU for cooperation in the field of space research and development, and the peaceful use of outer space.
The agreement includes cooperation in research, development of satellites for scientific experiments, remote sensing, communications, launch services, follow-up and satellite control, and operation and management in orbit.
The MoU also stipulates the use of research, development, and satellite ground systems and applications to deal with the material in space, as well as atmospheric science, radio astronomy, astrophysics, and zero gravity testing.
Oil exploration
Dr Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the CEO of the Mubadala Development Company, and Wang Yilin, president of the China National Petroleum Corporation, signed a strategic agreement for cooperation in oil exploration and production.
The agreement provides for cooperation in the oil and gas sector outside the UAE, and the new and existing projects, including existing projects in wilderness areas, marine projects and projects of liquefied natural gas fields.
Currency exchange
A currency exchange agreement between the Central Bank and People's Bank of China was signed by Mubarak Rashid Al Mansouri, Central Bank Governor, and the deputy governor of the People's Bank of China.
The agreement aims to conduct transactions, including the sale and resale, purchase and repurchase of the Chinese Yuan against the UAE Dirham and vice-versa to encourage and promote bilateral trade and direct investments.
The two sides also signed an MoU on the establishment of a clearing centre for the Chinese currency.
Both sides agreed on a joint review of the implementation of relevant arrangements on the 'Renminbi' companies in the UAE and to hold discussions on necessary adjustments and improvements.
The parties also agreed to establish regular dialogues to review the liquidity of the Renminbi currency and discuss the stability of its market.
Metrology
Dr Gargash and Zhi Shuping, director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, signed an MoU for cooperation in the standardisation and metrology fields, and conformity assessment. The MoU aims to enhance existing economic relations between the two countries by removing technical trade barriers, and cooperating in standardisation, metrology and conformity assessments.
Diplomacy
A protocol cooperation was signed in the field of diplomatic training and exchange of information between the Emirates Diplomatic Academy and China Foreign Affairs University. The agreement was signed by Dr Sultan Al Jaber and Zhao Jinjun, president of the Foreign Affairs University.
The two parties will cooperate in the publication of articles produced in both countries on issues relating to international politics, as well as various other exchanges. - Wam
