Qasr Al Muwaiji, birthplace of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will open this month as a museum, celebrating his leadership.
Following an elaborate conservation process undertaken by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA), the Al Ain fort will be home to a permanent exhibition and a public programme that explores Al Ain's influence on the country's culture, traditions and history.
Built by Shaikh Zayed in the 1940, Qasr Al Muwaiji was home to a few generations of the Al Nahyan family, including Shaikh Khalifa who was born there in 1948.
Renovations of the fort, which has its own palm tree oasis, began in the late 1970s and extended in 2009 to include archaeological excavations, preservation measures and restoration interventions.
Its original architectural features have been preserved and can be seen in the new museum.
The permanent exhibition is dedicated to Shaikh Khalifa, narrating significant moments of his early childhood, leadership and vast national achievements.
The exhibition will also highlight the chronology of the members of Abu Dhabi's ruling family associated with Qasr al Muwaiji, and the history of Al Nahyan family.
The public programme will include interactive activities and performances, presentations about the fort and its history.
