Earlier, the police had arrested nine Nepalis, seven Indians and a Pakistani in connection with the killing following riots in the Arabtech Company labour camp in Jebel Ali.
Beeshu Raj was allegedly beaten to death and six others were injured in the fight that broke out in the labour camp. Police sources said that none of the arrested labourers who were referred to the Criminal Investigation Department had confessed to the crime. One of the arrested workers, however, said he saw nine persons beating the victim to death. The Dubai Police was trying to zero in on to the workers who were actually involved in the murder, but have been finding it difficult in view of the large number of workers involved.
An eyewitness, who first informed the police, told your favourite No. I newspaper, Khaleej Times, that when he went to the site, he saw a mob of over 200 Indians surrounding 30 Nepalis holding shafts, knives and stones. When the camp security tried to intervene, he was beaten up by the inebriated labourers who continued to break furniture at the camp.
The police was immediately summoned to the site. But the two police patrols who arrived at the camp had a rough time controlling the mob, and had to summon the Emergency Team of Dubai Police.
The rioters hid themselves in their rooms but the police evacuated the 4,500 labourers residing in three buildings located in the compound, and arrested those who were involved in the fight.
A source from Arabtech who also lives in the labour camp said alcohol was not allowed in the camp. However, most labourers consumed alcohol outside the camp.
Officials at the Indian Consulate and the Embassy, when contacted, said they had no information about the incident. They, however, assured that they would look into the issue soon.
