Abu Dhabi records sharp drop in population growth

ABU DHABI -The population growth rate in the emirate of Abu Dhabi has dropped sharply to 3.7 percent during the year 2002 from 8.06 per cent during the year 2001, figures issued recently, said.

The population growth figures showed over 100 per cent rise during 2001, when it grew to 8.06 per cent against 3.93 per cent growth reported during 2000.

The total population in the emirate at the end of the year 2002 was 1,215,218, as against 1,170,254 in 2001. During year 2000, growing at rate of 3.93 per cent, the emirate had a total population of 1,082,917.

The Fertility Rate (TFR) for the UAE nationals is seen stagnant at 146 per 1,000 during 2002 and 2001. Though, during 2000, it was on the higher side at 149.7 per 1,000. Due to the various health programmes launched in the emirate, the infant mortality rate or the Still Birth Rate (SBR) dropped to a level of 6.79 per 1,000, during year 2002 as against 7.99 per 1,000 in 2001. It is seen as a significant decline, if measured with the high SBR figures of 8.9 births per 1,000, during 2000.

The Still Birth Rate of non-national residents has been noted at 7.16 per 1,000 declining by 0.34 births per 1,000, during 2002 as against a figure of 7.5 per 1,000 births.

However, the Crude Death Rate (CDR), in the emirate has decreased in 2002 with the figure touching a level of 2.15 deaths per 1,000 in 2002, as against 2.20 deaths per 1,000 in 2001, due to the health care facilities, which are ranked best in the world.

The figures of life expectancy at birth are seen at 75 per 1,000 during 2002 reflecting a steady trend that has remained unchanged during the three years under review from 2000 to 2002. It is also a result of several health initiatives launched by the government targeting at the maternal and child health care.

The life expectancy for male and female at birth has also been unchanged at 74 and 75.5 per 1000, respectively, since year 2000.

The ratio of male to female has maintained its previous level of 2:2 recorded during year 2002. During 2000 this ratio was 2:3.

Out of the total population of 12,15,218 registered in 2002, it included 839,091 male while female population was 376,127. The male population in 2001 was recorded at 789,826, growing from year 2000 figures of 747,739. The female population which was seen at 335,178 in 2000 grew to 380,428 in 2001 but declined marginally to 376,127 in 2002.

The population of Abu Dhabi city area had risen to 804,474 in 2002 climbing up from 789,043 in year 2001.

The population of Al Ain had also increased to a total of 410,744 in 2002 from 381,211 in 2001.
