While inaugurating five newly renovated and expanded departments at Al Qasimi Hospital yesterday, the Minister of Health Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qutami said that supporting the staff and appointing new people to meet the expansion demands were the ministry’s top priority.

With the new appointments, the total staff strength will cross 1,000 for the 362-bed hospital.

The newly opened departments include the Catherisation Laboratory, Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), cafeteria, auditorium and library.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Ameen Al Amiri, assistant under-secretary at the MoH and chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Qasimi Hospital said that the CAT Lab alone was a project worth Dh51 million.

“The new lab has been funded by the MoH and has many modern equipment,” he said.

The CSSD has been renovated at a cost of Dh1 million in which most equipment has been replaced while the library, cafeteria and auditorium have been modernised at a cost of Dh125,000.

Besides, the hospital will also within this year, open its state-of-the-art cardiology unit, which will be a separate unit based in the same premises.

“A new maternity and 200-bed paediatric ward costing Dh385 million is in the designing stages. The accident and emergency centre will, however, be renovated at a cost of Dh20 million,” explained Dr Amiri.

Newly appointed chief executive officer and chief medical officer of Al Qasimi Hospital, Dr Alan Sandford said that the hospital received 90,000 cases in the accident and emergency department last year.

“More bed space is planned during the expansion project of the accident and emergency department,” said Dr Sandford.
