Archaeology display to project identity of Gulf

FUJAIRAH — His Highness Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, inaugurated the first joint show of archaeological treasures of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries here yesterday.

The exhibition, which was held at the Fujairah Exhibition Centre, will continue for a period of one month.

Shaikh Hamad went round the exhibition and attended a presentation on the contents of the exhibition given by Ahmed Khalifa Al Shamsi, Director of the Department of Antiquities and Heritage in Fujairah.

He expressed his happiness to visit the exhibition and watch the contents of the exhibition which reflected the history of the region. He said that the exhibition provided an opportunity for a new type of tourism, “which gives us a very unique chance to know the history of our region and be proud of our national heritage.”

Shaikh Hamad stressed the need to uphold, protect and study the heritage to draw lessons from it which will guide us in the future.

Al Shamsi said the exhibition was the first of its kind in the Arab Gulf states. “It will underline importance of scientific seminars on the restoration of monuments,” he said.

The committee in charge of supervising the work of the exhibition has organised a visit to archaeological sites in Fujairah, which boasts about 230 sites, he added.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Nasr, Deputy Chairman of Museums Authority in Qatar, who is heading the Qatari delegation to the exhibition, said that the show was unique and more such partnerships were needed to project the identity of Gulf. He said the exhibition would increase the value of cultural, artistic and economic development of Fujairah.
