Dr Abdulla Al Hashimi, Senior Vice-President of Emirates Group Security, which runs the academy, said: "The rising popularity of the programme and the phenomenal response can be attributed to a changed mindset towards security.

"Until 9/11, security was seen, at best, as a necessary inconvenience. Now it has become an integral, fundamental and indispensable component of any industry, especially aviation."

Launched just last year in co-operation with the Edith Cowan University (ECU) of Perth, Australia, the one-year course involves home study and monthly tutorials held at the Emirates Aviation College, with examinations assessed and graded by ECU.

More than 60 security professionals from the police, the military and private security agencies have graduated from the first course.

Professor Nara Srinivasan, Dean of Transguard Education Academy and an ECU academic, commented: "The close relationship we have with Emirates Group Security and the students allows us to be dynamic in tailoring the programme to fit the profile of the students and also industry needs."

"For this new year, we have added an optional session on Effective and Critical Writing, which is instrumental in any academic pursuit," she said.

Transguard Education Academy is accepting applications for the Diploma in Aviation Security (Management) course until 1st October 2004.
