The Court of First Instance also ordered that the 32-year-old Iraqi defendant be deported after serving his jail term. The instructor earlier pleaded not guilty.

He denied having used any narcotics. He alleged to the presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir Fahmi that a Qatari friend used his smoking pipe which might have been left with traces of drugs.

He also said in court that he received a call from someone who alleged that he wanted to do some workouts. However, that someone, who met him outside the Gym, turned out to be a Criminal Investigation Department officer (CID). “He showed me an arrest and search warrant. At first, he told me that I was driving a car without a licence, which was untrue as my car had been impounded,” the Iraqi said in court.

In his defence, he also said the CIDs then arrested him for drug use.

The instructor was arrested on September 1 at Al Wasl Sports club. “We at the Anti-Narcotics Department of the Dubai police were informed that he was using and possessing drugs,” an Emirati lieutenant said in the investigation.

The lieutenant said they acquired a warrant from the Public Prosecution and arrested the defendant at the club about midnight that day.

According to the Criminal Lab report, the defendant’s urine sample test showed it contained hashish. However, no drugs were found with him or at his place. — mary@khaleejtimes.com.
