Who died in Paris last week, has decided to postpone demanding his medical records from the French authorities and disclosure of the cause of his death for political reasons, a family member told Khaleej Times yesterday.

The process is going to take a long time. There are several other political reasons relating to the peace process and the future of the Palestinian people, and it also involves international parties,” said Dr Mohsen Arafat, younger brother of Yasser Arafat.

Dr Arafat, an Abu Dhabi-based dentist, said the death of his brother was “not natural, it was rather mysterious”.

He said he met French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier on the day of death of his brother and discussed with him the issue. “He told me it is not in the interest of France or our interest (as Palestinians) to disclose the cause of his death. Holding any party criminally responsible for his death will create political trouble,” he noted.

Dr Arafat denied reports that France had agreed to hand over the dossier to one of Arafat’s family members. “They haven’t yet taken any such decision and if that is true, we are all eligible to receive those records,” he said, adding that as per the French law, he, his brothers and sisters are eligible to demand the dossier, and not only Suha Arafat.

It was reported that French authorities said on Thursday they would release Arafat’s medical records to his nephew, Nasser Al Kidwa, who is the Palestinian representative to the United Nations.

In Gaza, Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath said Al Kidwa would travel to France “since he’s a close relative of Arafat and a representative of the Palestinian Authority”.

Suha Arafat also intends to formally request his medical dossier. But she seemed unwilling during his treatment in France to release much information about his ailments. A lack of information regarding the cause of Arafat’s death has provided fertile ground for widespread rumours in the Arab world that he was poisoned, despite official denials.

The coroner for the Palestinian Authority has announced that Arafat died from “acute Tilex poisoning”, and blamed the CIA and Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service.

This atmosphere was created by previous assassination attempts by Israel against Palestinian leaders, Israel’s threats against Arafat, and the demand by Arafat’s doctor for an autopsy.

Analysts say that such mystery and rumours would make life more complicated for Arafat’s successors.

Arafat died at the age of 75 after two weeks of treatment at the Percy Military Training Hospital southwest of Paris. Aides said he died after going into a coma and suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Palestinian leaders said they wanted full information on his death, challenging French laws under which his widow Suha has prevented release of details.
