Community collects Rs50m

DUBAI — Members of the Pakistani community have collected Pak Rs50 million in three days for the earthquake victims in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and in the northern areas of Pakistan while another Rs 25 million are pledged to be donated this week.

The announcement was made at a fund-raising Iftar dinner on Tuesday to facilitate and provide humanitarian assistance to the victims in Pakistan, jointly hosted by Gul Mohammad Memon, President of Pure Food Ltd, Kamran Khan, Chairman of Tessori Group, and Yahya and Mohsin of Fortune Group at the Grosvenor House in Dubai.

The major contributions included Rs10 million by Kamran, Rs5 million by Gul, Rs1.6 million by Mohammed Ali, Rs600,000 by Imran Chaudhry and Rs600,000 by Nasir Shan. During the Iftar, a number of guests, specially women and children, announced donations ranging from Dh100 to Dh50,000.


The new Ambassador of Pakistan Ahsan Ullah Khan and the new Consul-General Abdul Hameed, along with over 150 invitees, attended the fund-raising campaign. The guests offered special prayers for the victims of the tragic event.

Ambassador Ahsan thanked the UAE government, the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, General Shaikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the royal family of Dubai and Their Highnesses Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, for their generous contribution.

He said Shaikh Khalifa specially donated $100 million and a mobile hospital for the victims in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Ahsan appealed to the non-resident Pakistanis to donate with unity. The priorities for short term mobilisation are blankets and milk powder, he said, adding that in the long-term, families affected by the earthquake will have to be rehabilitated and the devastated areas will have to be rebuilt.
