According to information provided by callers on the hotline, Khaleej Times investigated the issue by keeping a secret eye on the ongoing activities.
Many residents, especially women in some residential areas in Deira and Bur Dubai, are afraid to step out of their apartments during the night because of the problems created by groups sitting and drinking in the street.
A source who did not want to be named said, "They always park the car in different places so as to avoid being caught."
Many people in an area on Al Khail Road also complained that drunken labourers occasionally gather at a construction site nearby to have fun. "Sometimes their fun leads to fights. Sometimes laughing and singing becomes loud late at night because they do not care about the people living in the area," said the source.
Other sources said, "It is not only in that area, there is a lot of liquor being sold close to the National Paints area, and another area close to Jumeirah."
The sources added, "It's like they have a turf, their own territory, and are limited to only their area. Usually what is done is that, people call them, and they send the liquor to their place, provided that the people who want to drink are in their turf. Not only that, some dealers will not deliver if the caller does not know the same language."
According to a large number of residents in Deira Creek area, they are facing myriad problems from drunken people during the day and night. "We cannot go out from our flats especially during the night time because of groups sitting and drinking in the streets. Alcohol is available for them wherever they sit. Many agents are selling alcohol illegally in the area. The easy availability of alcohol at cheap prices encourages the groups to sit and drink together in the street," said a resident of Deira Creek area.
"They always make comments when we pass them and behave badly. Alcohol is available at their door steps as many agents are selling alcohol illegally in the area," she added.
Another resident said, "Normally groups gather near my apartment for drinking alcohol. They just have to give a missed call to the agent and they deliver the alcohol to the spot. After drinking, they create a ruckus.''
A resident in Bank Street in Bur Dubai who does not want to be named said, "Most of these agents bring alcohol from Ajman and Umm Al Quwwain where they get it for a cheap price. They bring it here and deliver it to people in their rooms. "Most of the groups fill the alcohol in soft drink bottles and drink in the street pretending that they are drinking soft drinks. Even police patrols passing by will not recognise that they are drinking alcohol," he claimed.
