Gergawi said unemployment and poverty are the main causes of conflict and extremism in some countries in the region.

“The Arab World understands the dangers of poverty and unemployment but our success in solving these problems has been mixed.”

“The Arab World has to initiate change from within instead of accepting solutions from outside the region,” he added.

Reflecting on the discussions at the fourth Arab Strategy Forum (ASF), Gergawi said: “We are glad that the forum provided an opportunity to share ideas and approaches for catalysing change and development in the Arab World.”

“The forum has reinforced its position as a platform to discuss solutions to the key challenges facing the Arab world. it has also provided a free and open environment to discuss these challenges.”

The sessions at the ASF offered insight into a variety of regional economic and political issues including sustainable development and the threats and opportunities of globalisation.
