Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director of Dubai Traffic Police Department, said 27 numbers with a base value of Dh 3,000 each, 27 others with a base value of Dh 5,000 each and nine numbers of a base value of Dh 35,000 each were on offer at the auction that took place at the Quality Guarantee Hall at the traffic department in Deira.
The overall base value of the offered numbers was Dh 530,000. The number that fetched the highest price was 102 in the E code.
It was sold to an Arab expatriate for Dh 129,000 after fierce competition with an Asian expatriate, especially after the number was given a price tag of 124,000. The two bidders then started competing with each other, with each of them putting forward another Dh 1,000 to win.
The number was finally won by the Arab expatriate whose Dh 129,000 bid for the number had no challenges at the end of the auction at around 12,30.
On Wednesday's auction, which fetched exactly Dh 1.480,000, began at 9am at the Quality Guarantee Hall at the traffic department in Deira. The numbers on offer included nine three-digit numbers each of which with a base value of Dh 35,000.
They were, 102, 103, 104, 124, 125, 126, 135, 136 and 137. The second set includes 1411, 1311, 1211, 2422, 2322, 2122, 3433, 3233, 3133, 4344, 4244, 4144, 5355, 5255, 5155, 6366, 6266, 6166, 7377, 7277, 7177, 8388, 8288, 8188, 9399, 9299 and 9199. The base value was Dh 5,000.
The third set includes, 1040, 1030, 1320, 2040, 2030, 2010, 3040, 3020, 3010, 4030, 4020, 4010, 5030, 5020, 5010, 6030, 6020, 6010, 7030, 7020, 7010, 8030, 8020, 8010, 9030, 9020 and 9010, with a base value of Dh 3,000 each.
Both nationals and expatriates can own unlimited number of customised numbers. Ownership certificates are governed by the rules and conditions governing civil transactions. "The auction is attracting large crowds, and we will be holding the next auction on Wednesday," said Brig. Al Zafeen.
On Wednesday's auction reflected the success of the previous customised car number auction when the base value of some numbers increased four times, and the Dubai Traffic Police Department decided to launch weekly auctions of low base value after a month's delay as new code number-plates were not yet ready.
On May 19, the first auction for Code E customised car number-plates fetched some Dh7.8 million. The auction was held at the Dubai Police Officers Club at Al Garhood. Six numbers of the 36 Code E numbers sold had fetched over Dh3 million. The most expensive number (33) fetched Dh 1.140,000. The 36 numbers were two and three digit numbers. The customised car number-plates auction system was first implemented in June 2001.
