The species of the whale is yet to be confirmed by experts at Dubai Municipality's Environment Department.

The partially decomposed cadaver of the mammoth creature was spotted by Saleh Al Hashmi, Airport Operation's Duty Manager at the Dubai International Airport, who was passing by the corniche area.

"I smelt it before I saw it. It must have died yesterday," he said.

It was the first time that Al Hashmi saw a whale this big in Dubai.

"I have seen whales on my trips abroad to the West, but this is the first time I am seeing one here in Dubai," he added.

When informed of the beached dead whale, Reda Salman, Head of the Environment Protection and Safety Section (EPSS) at Dubai Municipality, told Khaleej Times that it would be removed from the beach after details were collected and the cadaver disposed off in a safe way.

"We do not know yet what kind of whale it is but we do know it belongs to the region and is an endangered species," he said.

He said experts are yet to find out the cause of death. "We don't know how or why it died. The lower jaw is completely missing and the underbelly is also in a bad condition, with organs sticking out. There are many possibilities," he added.

The municipality is meanwhile working on the logistics to move the huge cadaver, but operations were hampered yesterday due to choppy sea conditions.

According to Salman, the body would be removed today after proper lifting equipment is brought to the site.
