According to sources, some of the residents went to the Ruler’s office to lodge a complaint. The construction work along the Umm Suqueim stretch, considered to be the most popular of all the beaches with a great view of Burj Al Arab, started a fortnight ago with workers putting up fences around the beach area.
The real problem started when the area was being cordoned off with aluminium sheets. This sparked off a series of protests with angry residents criticising officials.
With several residents complaining against the construction work that blocked the entire stretch preventing them from gaining an easy entrance to the beach, Shaikh Mohammed ordered that the construction work must stop.
Fences and aluminium sheets have not been removed yet. But officials in the Dubai Municipality said action in this connection will be taken from today.
The Umm Suqueim stretch attracts a lot of tourists every day. “This is a wonderful part of the entire beach. My house is nearby and the view is very scenic. We were quite depressed when it all started. And no one was giving us an exact answer as to what was happening. We are now thankful to Shaikh Mohammed for his order. The beach is a public place and it should not be touched,” said Svetlana, a Rusian national.
Sources said the plan was to built a resort that would consist of all the facilities meant for beach-side living. “There were instances when some visitors abused labourers who were engaged in the construction work along the area. The entire place was getting destroyed. Now we are waiting for the these fences to be removed. We thank the government for this,” said Rimi Narayan, an employee with the ABN AMRO Bank.
“Moreover, during summer, people will be going more and more to the beaches. Closing the beach at this time was not a good idea at all,” she said.
Officials of the Zabel Investments could not be contacted for their comments.
