Regarded recently as a medium that played music all day long, the power of the radio as an important news broadcasting tool was proved recently when it came up with some bold and up-to-date coverage of some events like the recent Mumbai blasts and the Kumbh tragedy.
"Radio serves not only as a means of entertainment but it's also meant to provide information. City 101.6 will be at the forefront, proactive in providing the expatriate Asian population vital information in making them feel closer to home," says Chetan Fernandes, Programming Head, City 101.6 FM.
"Our news stands out distinctly as we have correspondents from all over India and Pakistan who do live reportage of all incidents that happen. We try to capture the essence of news which affects our listeners here," says Keertika Rawat, Head of News at City FM. Launched in May 2002, City FM is the latest channel of the Arabian Radio network (ARN).
According to her, the channel's coverage of recent Mumbai bomb blasts has won accolades from its listeners. "The coverage came as a huge relief for those who were keen to know about the latest developments in the city in the aftermath of the blasts."
According to Pradeep Shetty, an employee of a government department in the UAE: "The work that City 101.6 did on some of the recent incidents back home was truly commendable. I was away from home on work and radio was the only tool of keeping in touch with the latest developments in Mumbai."
Another listener Imtiyaz Khilledar, a Mumbai-based expatriate working in a bank in the UAE, said: "Such an event created a lot of fears about the safety of the people back home. Since I was at work, I had no access to television and had to depend totally on radio coverage to find out about what was happening and the City 101.6 did not disappoint."
Arabic station Al Arabiya 98.9 FM and English radio service free 96.7 FM are some of the other radio channels being offered from the Dubai Media City-registered ARN. Its radio services are an effective blend of music, entertainment, news and information with all the three delivering a brand identity and a communication solution to reach a target audience effectively.
