These were part of the agenda of the 13th meeting of the GCC Ministers of Culture which began here yesterday morning. The first session of the three-day meeting was attended by the under-secretaries of the GCC ministries of culture under the chairmanship of Bilal Al Badoor, Under-secretary of Cultural Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development.

The agenda of the meeting includes: programmes and activities completed, programmes and activities proposed for 2006-08, periodical cultural festival, the executive framework of the Cultural Week in India, symposium on cultural development in the GCC region, rules for honouring innovators in the GCC, writer’s guide in the GCC, Autumn Khaleej Festival, recommendations of the ninth meeting on book fairs, and new activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abdullah bin Akal Al Hashim, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Environment Affairs at the GCC General Secretariat, said that cultural relations in the present days had dominated political relations. He expressed his confidence that the participants, who he said were responsible for cultural development, will put forward a programme to achieve the GCC goals because the GCC leaders wanted to see results through deeds and not just words.

Welcoming the participants, Bilal Al Badoor said, in his inaugural address, that the meeting was being held at a time when cultural issues have gained significant importance in the GCC. “We have to concentrate on these issues since our leadership has high expectations from us,” he said. He said that culture was not only the backbone of society. It also played a role in future planning. “Although cultural issues have been discussed time and again in the past, we still have to make progress in achieving our final goal,” he said.

Amal Humaid Belhoul, Under-secretary for Community Development Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, emphasised that while the GCC culture has a number of achievements to its credit, a lot still remains to be done. The GCC culture ministers will attend the final day of the meeting tomorrow.
